Why buy Cara Jane acrylic shape templates? Instead of being all on one sheet each size is an individual template making them easier to use. They also have guidelines engraved onto them which helps to align patterns and make repeated designs. Keep them chained together with the ball chain supplied. There is a hole in the corner of each template and you get the inside shape too if you prefer to cut around the outside rather than the inside.
Customer testimonials about Cara Jane template sets –

”I love the measuring lines on them.”
I find the best way to use the template is with a thin needle tool. This is a thin sewing needle with a polymer handle (pictured below). A thin needle produces less ‘drag’ – produces less crumbs of clay as it cuts and won’t damage the template. Making the needle quite short makes it easier to handle as it can’t bend. Practice first on some scrap clay to identify which needle you prefer!
- It is often best to start ‘cutting in a patterned area on the side, occasionally there is a little mark where you start/finish the cut and it shows less on patterned clay than plain.
- The set of templates comes with a small ball chain you can use to join them together to stop them getting lost. Personally most of the time I find it is easier to separate the templates when using them. The ball chain opens and closes by placing the end ball into the gap in the closure and then pulling it down into line with the closure.
- There are vertical and horizontal guidelines to help you align patterns and make repeated designs. If you use the horizontal guides, for example, you can consistently have the join in the same place.
The templates are made from clear acrylic but come with a protective coating to protect them in transit. Please take care when removing the covering as they are built to be small and convenient to use rather than indestructible! You can leave this on but if you wish to remove it the best way is shown in this video here: –
